Well I am 22 now, so I figured it was about time I start collecting some "goodies".
Just picked out a new USP 9SD for a suppressor host (SWR Trident 9) from Clyde Armory. Only $795 and it comes with 3 mags and a thread protector (date code AI), so I think I got a pretty good deal.
I am really excited, but I have a few quick questions for you...
My FFL is going to let me shoot it for free when I go pick it up, but do I need to clean it or perform any other actions on it first? And if I need to clean it what parts specifically should I focus on? (In the past I have just ran a few patches down the bore of a new rifle.)
Secondly, I don't have a cleaning kit for handguns. Is this something that usually comes with the guns or something I need to buy. (I will probably invest in a nice kit, but I just need to know if I need to bring my gear with me when I pick up the USP from my FFL.)
Thanks guys!

Yes, clean the pistol prior to shooting. Biggest priority is to remove the packing grease that HK puts in all of the guns prior to their delivery to the distributor. You don't have to but you should.
You won't get a cleaning kit and so you will need to either take your own supplies with you or stock up on a few essentials beforehand as necessary - q tips, patches, oil, grease, hoppes, brush / boresnake &c
Welcome to the fold :)

Where is the packing grease? Just in the barrel?

Thanks Carrots!
Just did a quick look through my cleaning kits and found a .357 brass brush. This is ok to use on the 9mm 9SD right?
I'll be sure to post some pics of my new toy when I get her home. It will look naked to me though with only a thread protector and no can... :( Hurry up BATFE!

Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the boards! If your brush kit is for a .357 SIG, yes it will fit. I suggest buying a Kleen-Bore cleaning kit for the brushes/patches etc. I would buy Hoppes #9 for a solvent and Breakfree LP (Not CLP) for your gun oil. Clean your gun after each trip to the range and you will have no problems at all. Your biggest problem will be which HK to buy next :)

If you are going to be an "every excuse to go to the range” guy (and you will after you shoot that puppy), you may want to pick up a patch jag for running patches down the barrel if your kit doesn't have one. By the time I finish shooting, I don't have the manual dexterity (or patience) to play thread the needle with a patch & eyelet. Just remember, it’s a gun, not a painting… It’s supposed to be used, not hung up and locked away.

Hey now, don't go knocking paintings they are to be enjoyed as well... just in a different way than handguns :D

Given that the cost of a nice new brush will be +/- $2 my advice would be to treat yourself for the second time this week. Don't cheap out on the important things :)

Haha very true, this will actually be my third treat as I just recently bought a suppressor. :)

Just looked on Wikipedia b/c I was curious...
.357 Mag and .38 Special are .357"
9mm X 19 and .357 Sig are .356"
That is 1/1000th of an inch.
I tend to doubt any cleaning brush company can make a product that accurate and this makes me believe any brush marked exclusive for of the above calibers is merely a marketing strategy.
This has nothing to do with me trying to save money on a brush btw. haha :)
Additionally Hoppes makes a bore snake for these calibers. One model fits all.
Hoppe's BoreSnake #24002 .380, 9mm, .38, .357 caliber
I love bore snakes for my shotguns! Anyone like them for handguns as well?

Yes, a .357 Sig brush will work for a 9mm barrel (I use one for both). Same with the bore snake (I have one that 1 use for both calibers). No one disagrees with that, but why use a old brush for your new high dollar gun?! My suggestion of buying a new one was based on the fact that you wern't 100% sure if the brush that you had was 'sig' and that at $2 I didn't see the point in taking even the 0.01% risk that it was even slightly different. If you are going to start doing some serious shooting then it just makes sense. Anyhow, as you will I am not your mother :)

I'll probably get a new brush. Not trying to argue or anything, but just trying to figure some things out. I really appreciate your advice, so please don't hesitate to tell me what you think!
The point was I don't think there is a specific 9mm/.357 Sig brush. The difference in caliber between 9mm/.357 Sig and .357 Mag/38 Special is .001". I think the brush for all those calibers is the same size.
The Hoppes snake you use is one size fits all.

Hmm, I didn't know that and so it would seem that we both learnt something today. Happy days indeed.
Whatever the hell brush you end up with, try to get one in a little vial or find one that your new brush will fit in. When you are done using it, put it back in the vial and fill with non-chlorinated brake cleaner, shake it a little, and that sucker will come out brand new! If you leave solvent on the brush it will slowly eat at it.
You'll have to try a Bore snake yourself to find out if you like it. I don't care for them, just like the good ol' rod and brush. But lots of people love them.
Happy shooting
