View Full Version : Should I refinish my P7

I purchased one of CDNN's Plum slide P7's.

The gun is in good shape, and to be honest I would like to keep it for life as "the" P7 in the HK collection.

I love the P7, so I was going to send it off to Fords for a brushed chrome finish magazines as well.

My question is...is any P7 (in good shape) worth refinishing?

Thanks gang!

I was considering refinishing my recently acquired P7 but decided against it as there is nothing wrong with the finish it has now. So instead I'll just keep an eye out for another one in not as good shape cosmetically and send that one off for a new finish.

I love the optimistic outlook...always another HK around the corner. :)

If you intend on keeping your P7 for 'life' leave it in its original plum finish. That affects the value none whatsoever. If you go with hard chrome it will no longer be in its original finish. That does affect the value. One thing I've found with my plum slide P7PSP, the color of the slide doesn't change the accuracy one iota. The guys at the gun range still come over and drool on the pistol. Not once has anyone said 'uhhh, that's one of those gawd awful plum slide P7s. Keep it original, shoot it and enjoy it. JMHO :)

ifor me the colour is what it is, i use my pistols as tools not to take to a beauty pagaent...however, i asked a similar question not too long ago

http://hkpro.com/forum/showthread.php?t=103696

although my concern was to prevent rusting/pitting not changing the actual look of the pistol

although my concern was to prevent rusting/pitting not changing the actual look of the pistolUltimate finish for rust resistance/abrasion resistance is hard chrome. I have a number of pistols in hard chrome...not to change the look...but to give it the hardest use finish going. Nothing wrong with a P7 in hard chrome.

If youre looking for a black finish thats every bit as hard as hard chrome combined with extreme rust resistance, contact Coal Creek Armory for their black Melonite finish. http://www.coalcreekarmory.com/custom_finishing.html

Yeah, I am gonna have my P7 refinished, mostly because the finish it has looks like ass and there is a very tiny amount of pitting on the front edge of the slide near the muzzle. Also, I do like the look of a nicely refinished firearm. Also, the tool aguement is a two-way street. I bought it as a tool, a carry weapon, so I am not terribly concerned about the collector's value. I just want a tough, corrosion-resistant finish.

Also don't over look the "Black-T" finish by Mr. Birdsong, there's a reason he's been doing it for the military for a long time.

Nothing wrong with a refinish. I considered doing one of my P7's, as I love the hard chrome. But then I bought a silver slide so that will be my carry and I will save my original finish one as a back up! It only has minor wear and I really like the original color.

If you plan to carry it yes. The standard blued finish is poor for concealed carry or use in or around sweat.

I think your decision on refinishing the gun depends on what you want to do with it. If you are planning on keeping this gun forever, such as i am. I am going to have mine refinished because i love the look of the stainless and i like my guns that i dont carry or use in competition to be in pristine shape. So refinishing the gun doesnt matter if it effects value because to me this gun is priceless. It is the most accurate gun i've ever shot. I just wish i could get some more magazines to go along with the gun

I believe I will take the plunge and send her off to Ford's for a Chrome finish.

I hate the idea of parting with her for 10 weeks, but I love the look!

Kost who did that P7 in hard chrome for you? That looks AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!The P7's belong to Ken Lund, Tripp did the Cobra Chrome, he no longer does hard chrome, unless you buy one of his 1911's - its a finish option he offers. I have a number of USP's in Tripp Cobra Chrome - its a pretty sweet finish. :)

For my custom Colt 1911's Im using Metaloy now. http://originalmetaloy.com/gallery.html

Here is some of their work.

Nice looking Sig there Kost, but then I am a little biased towards that particular model. Great gun, and of course variety is the spice :)

I've got a bunch of P7s and P7M8s now and I've finally figured out which one to send to Ford's. Personally, I think EVERYONE should hard chrome one of their P7s - good protection for the gun AND they look great!

It seems to me that whether to refinish your P7 or not is strictly a matter of your personal preference. I had this P7 of mine hard chromed by Virgil Tripp before he closed down his plating operation. It doesn't shoot any better than it did (it was and still is a real "tack driver"), but I like the way it looks.

Nice where did you get the G-10 grips?

Thank you! The grips are machined from Micarta® laminate and were made by Pete Foldyna. He can be contacted through his web site:

Sweet gun & rig

On his web site they are black & red for the P7M8 only. Yours look black & silver. Were these custom?

Thanks

I'm looking for a P7 or a P7M8 to be refinished in Robar NP3.

- I like the enbedded teflon in the nickle for the rust & wear properties
- The coating process is more robust than the plating process (according to robar) better adhesion
- Lifetime warranty @ Robar and only one year @ Fords
- I'm anxious about electroplating any steel that is as hard as these P7s due to the risk of hydrogen embrittlement

Teflon finish has several benefits:
1. rust risistant (a must for CCW)esp in hot humid states
2. smoother function (self lubricating)
3. easier to clean

Personally I avoid a reflective finish on any weapons ie guns & knives for obvious reasons. This is strictly from a functional stand point at the expense of esthetics, not that a blck/blue finish is ugly by a long shot.
Robar (Rogard) and Walter Birdsong (black T) both offer a black finish.

You can't go wrong with NP3....but I'm not sure what more robust means....as for hydrogen embrittlement, I have been on the Cult of the P7 for quite a few years and have never seen this problem with the many P7s that have been hard chromed...

Hydrogen Embrittlement is a problem the automotive industry experienced in the late 90 and early 00. When very hard steel was electroplated hydrogen molicules were trapped in the microstructure and if not properly relieved caused brittle fractures in the fasteners. Glad to hear it hasent effected the electroplated P7's

Harpo:

The Micarta grips were a limited run of which the pair I own were the last in Pete Foldyna's inventory at the time. However, if you give Pete a call or send him a message through his web site I think he could make a pair to fit your P7.
