SIGARMS Incorporated and Heckler & Koch, Incorporated each received a contract award with a maximum quantity of 65,000 pistols that may be purchased over the next five years. SIGARMS Incorporated, a small business located in Exeter, New Hampshire, received a $23.7 million contract for 9 x 19 mm and .40 caliber pistols. Heckler & Koch, a large business located in Sterling, Virginia, received a $26.2 million contract for 9 x 19 mm, .40, and .357 caliber pistols.
So: why did the DHS order the P2000s in three calibers? How/why/who will get what?

That is very old news from 2004.
The different branches of the DHS had different caliber requirements.

Old news yes, but I just posted that to show the three different calibers.
My question was Why? Why not have Commonality of ammo?

I thought that Sig rec'd a contract for .357SIG caliber too? Doesn't the US Secret Service & Air Marshalls use the P229 in .357SIG??
Who/which Dept. would utilize the Hk P2000 in .357SIG???

To my knowledge, the Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents uses the P2000 in .40 LEM here in Arizona. They used to have the USP Compact .40 LEM. Not usre about the others.

“This type of multiple contract award will provide the government the flexibility it needs to enable the DHS entities to address their diverse operational missions, while still maximizing logistical efficiencies found through standardization,” said Thomas Trotto, Director of the ICE National Firearms and Tactical Training Unit.
The HK pistol models chosen were the HK P2000 US, HK P2000 SK Subcompact, and the USP Compact/LEM (Law Enforcement Modification).

I guess the different calibers because the different agancies don't want to switch to one caliber.
That would reduce ammo cost, but hey, it's only tax money they spend!
