If I understand correctly, the ambi safety and match trigger options for the HK45 will be available in the next couple months. Will it be more cost effective to wait until the pistol can be ordered with these options, or will the net net be about the same? And would this retrofitting need to be done in Trussville?

It's only a matter of time before all guns will be made/assembled here in the USA. Whether they will be German parts or some American parts assembled by Bob or all German parts assembled by Heinreck will be the question. Future manufacturing will be here in the USA. The 416 and 417 are already slated to be made here. I would rather retro fit a German gun than wait on a US gun. Ask the Sig boys which they would rather have now.

The HK45 already uses the Match Trigger parts except for the over-travel stop.

The ambi-safety should be available in the next couple months. It is really easy to install yourself so you may just need to buy the part.

The future is cloudy... Ideally, all other things being equal, it would probably be cheaper to buy the gun in the configuration you want than to retrofit it. Extra parts and labor cost something. However, things are not equal or static. We have a weakened dollar that will probably continue to get weaker over the next year. This could mean the gun will cost more dollars to buy. And has been mentioned, production is supposed to be moved to America so you will have the potential issue of a different level of quality. -I'm not saying quality will decline, but there is the potential for a different level of quality when a new line starts up.

Regarding the retrofit of the gun at a later point, I do not think it would have to go back to the factory. It is my understanding that this is something a qualified H&K armorer can do. One of my friend's is a certified H&K armorer and I know he has converted USP variants for members of his agency. That said, I do not know if you have access to a certified H&K armorer in your area. Of course, you could probably do it yourself but I believe that would affect the warranty.

Is it possible to simply flip the safety, from RH only to LH only?

I'm a lefty shooter too. Not sure about the HK45, but I just had this done on my USP40. It was $180 for the part and labor. If I remember, labor was only $75 so the ambi safety was about $90...the rest was tax. This is for the ambi safety, though, which has the safety lever on BOTH sides. Might be cheaper if you do LH only.
