Went to the range today to get some time in on the 45 and decided while I was there I’d put some rounds through the SK. The first mag I had a failure to feed this is the first malfunction I’ve ever experienced with this gun. After that things didn’t get any better I thought maybe it was just a fluke, but then the slide wouldn’t lock back after the last round. I thought it was a mag problem so I changed mags and still it would not lock back after the last round.

Any ideas on what could be causing my problem? I clean it regularly and it has less than 1000 rounds through it. Like I said I’ve never had the gun malfunction in any way so I’m a little shocked and disappointed.

What ammo are you using?

If it's reloads, there you have it.

If you're using factory ammo, the issue could be a bad main spring or a failure to properly lubricate.

I'm using blazer brass. I have used the same lot with no issues in the past. I just cleaned it then applied a CLP wipe down with a touch of lube on the slide rails.

Good cleaning job on the mags as well?

What's the problem with reloads I have put 5k + reloads through both my USPc.40 and P2sk 9mm with out a single FTF.

I would blame the first malfunction on the ammo, it happens sometimes. The slide lock on the mags, the HK mag springs seem to do this, especially on my USP 45. From what I have read a lot of people change the HK springs to wolf springs and the problem disappears. I have decided to deal with the slide problem and put the extra money in my gas tank:170000:

I have 5 10 round full size 45 mags that have worn springs and don't lock the slide open. I bought Wolf Springs and OMG they are strong. I have to load the mags and leave them loaded so hopefully the springs will weaken, lol.

BTW, the Wolf Springs are 2X bigger than the HK springs. Really thick and strong.

I don't think he was saying reloads in general. Just that you might have one bad batch or even just one round that maybe the OCL, bullet depth, or case length was off slightly and could possibly cause the malfunction.

I might have to change the mag springs. They seem to be holding their tension pretty well, but they have stayed loaded for the last couple years I'm sure they are compressing some. If the Wolf springs are that much stronger it seems it would be worth changing the springs just for added reliability and durability of the mag.

Where is the best place to get the wolf springs from their website or is there a better (cheaper) place?

check my FAQ on the slide staying closed on the last round. We figured out that it happens when you're gripping the gun hard, as it exerts pressure on the mag finger rest enough (downwards) so that the slide won't catch and keep the slide open.

If the ammo is that blazer CCI aluminum stuff, don't put that in your gun. Aluminum rounds are a bit "sticky" and don't always let go of the extractor since it's a softer metal.

Thanks MueveloNYC,
That’s a great tread!!!! That'll help allot I'm going to try and go shoot again today and really keep an eye on my grip. I have the finger rest mags so that could defiantly be the problem. I have also just recently changed my grip in the last month to the "correct" way so I may be riding the release with my thumb!

Also I'm using the CCI brass cases not the aluminum, but thanks for the info Ill stay away from it.

bjoneill said it correctly, I wasn't saying that all reloads are bad, but often times it's the ammo that causes the problem.

Mag spring tension can be a good thing, but if your mag springs are too heavy, they'll cause your slide velocity to drop and cause failures o feed and extract.

If you research on here, you'll find that, by far, the most LIKELY culprits are the mag-springs. The best place to buy them is www.gunsprings.com :)

*** EDIT *** Oooops!! *** I didn't notice that you had an SK. . . Wolff is not making them yet as far as I know. They did borrow an SK mag from a forum member some time back, so that they could use it as a model, but I am not aware that they ever followed through on it yet.

If you remove the spring from one mag, and stretch it out an additional 30% or so, you can try and see if the additional mag-spring pressure solves your problem. If it does, you can get new factory springs (under warranty) from HK. The stretching will not be a permanent fix, the spring will revert within a couple loadings.

If you have an X-grip for your USPc mags, you can try them in the SK. Wolff makes 10%+ for those mags, and my SK seems to run better with them rather than the factory mag springs. As far as the standard 9 round SK mags, the spring wire diameter is larger than the HK spring wire diameter in the USPc mags, that is why I switched out the springs in my USPc mags. If you are having issues with the stock SK mags you might contact HK for some replacements.

Got to go shoot yesterday and I think I've found my problem or problems. I do ride the slide release now I never noticed I did this before it must be a product of cahnging my grip. Most of my problem is my hands are just small enough to fit all 4 fingers on the grip, but just big enough to push down in the pinkie rest of the mag. I'm going to see if I can find some flat floor plates or a couple mags with the flat floor plates to try and remedy my problem.

So thanks for all the ideas on what to look for and MueveloNYC for the FAQ.

Anyone know where to get flat mags or just the floor plates?
