View Full Version : HK45 Finish problem - Me too? [PICS]

This is the recoil buffer mechanism. The weapon at the time of these pictures had exactly 300 rounds through it. The only product that has touched the gun at all is Break Free CLP. I used Q-Tip cotton swabs on the part in question only - no abrasives.

Do I need to contact Hecker & Koch about a replacement? Do I have a defective HK45?

Well, I've never had the opportunity or privilege of handling an Hk45, but looking through an on line owners manual it looks like the area of wear is a result of normal use. The worn area is where the barrel chamber pushes against in order to return to battery when the slide moves forward. Hopefully others that do own HK45s will be able to confirm this and alleviate any concerns.

That's normal and is of no concern since that portion of the recoil assembly rubs metal to metal with the barrel. That's what gun oil is for. No issue unless your user I.D. is Magnumzer0.

I have to believe that the OP is being sarcastic..... I hope.

I wasn't being sarcastic. It's my first HK and my first handgun. That exposed area had the coating on it, now it doesn't. Is this really such a ridiculous question?

I'm a long-time watch collector. If there's a part of high friction, they don't use metal on metal contact. Why would I assume guns would be any different? Is the wearing off of the coating at that point normal or not? The gun's brand new.

[Edit:] I just scrolled up and saw P7M8's response. Thank you for taking the time to answer the question.

If the gun still goes bang I'm sure it's alright.

It still goes bang. I just didn't want it to go boom.

Perfectly fine. I always put a little militec grease on that spot when cleaning and preparing for the next firing session. I know how you feel because when I first got into handguns, especially new and expensive ones, I was paranoid about every little thing. People on boards then were not as polite as they are now and some hurt my feelings about but I learned. Enjoy your HK. Get some more, quick.

Watches don't have 21,000psi exerted on them when they cycle.

Anywhere you have metal to metal contact will show wear over time. This is perfectly normal regardless of the lubricant you use.

Sorry Sobriquet.

I guess this is your first handgun or gun period.

If you shoot a gun.... it will have "wear" marks in those areas where there is metal to metal contact.... there is no gun that does not.

I thought someone saw the other "finish" issues and was making fun of them.

Yours would not be normal if there were no "wear" marks.

It is getting awfully thick in here with "normal" wear issues or "self induced" wear issues that are not issues at all.

Your question is understandable. So was my response.

Those wear marks are completely normal.

The parts will certainly wear with use but only 300 rounds with that amount of wear should not be.

All of the metal parts presumably have a hard nitrocarburized layer of about 0.000xx of an inch depth and presumably it's still there but in my estimation it isn't "normal" to wear the top coat off so quickly.

All the more reason for HK to adopt a PVD coating on top of the nitrocarburized steel.

Since it would cost maybe $200 to coat the slide assembly and guide rod if you sent it yourself I'd bet it would be less than $10 if done by IonBond. Hell, I'd pay $50 more for it.

Shouldn't be anything to worry about. Just keep on shooting the gun :)

I know how you feel. I just got a P2000 .40 cal. Mine did the exact same thing after firing the first time about 200 rounds. I also noticed the 4 notches the slide rides on lost most of its coating and after 3 times is now almost completely gone. I also have a little mark starting to show metal on the base where the front of the barral is. I'm assuming its from the plastic guide ring on the recoil spring or from the slide itself contacting that point. I'm also a bit worried about all the wear it seams to show, however it shoots like a dream and I can only assume these things are normal.

You think that's bad, the locking block of my Mark 23 brings a tear to my eye.....until i shoot again, that is :D

Metal on metal wear is perfectly normal.

Thanks to everyone for the education and setting my mind at ease. I'm going to go play with her this evening.
