Just got back from NRA convention. Got to handle 416D,MP5SD,G36,and a bunch of handguns. Ask about civilian version of 416. Both booth reps. seem to feel HK Germany is interested in US manufacture (they seem to thing in New Hampshire-Does that sound right?) of long guns for sale to civilians. Mentioned to them that majority opinion online was emphasis for sale to military/LE. They both took exception to this. However, neither knew anything more than anyone else about a timeline. After their reassertion of Germany's desire to make these in the US, I asked if they thought plans were on hold to see how the political climate plays out-"only time will tell" was the return. Truely a master of stating the obvious. Also saw civilian version of FNH SCAR. I have read alot of debates here about SCAR vs. 416. The FNH rep. was convinced the 16" barrel version will be out before year's end.

To me this sounds like good news.

I tend to agree but with some reservation. The two guys working the booth were a little avasive and neither will get an award for the friendliest rep. at the convention. However they were resolute in the notion that HK is committed to getting a civilian version of the 416 made in the US. I suppose there is no good reason to be openly deceptive. If they didn't feel like it was in the works, they could have just said ," it ain't gonna happen-deal with it."

After the BlackWater/ HK coverage in the media it is possible that HK wants to "slide this through" without too much scuff from outside observers. Who knows where the story would lead if some idiot wanting to be a journalist decided to write on the "future release" of the MR223.
