I'm new to owning guns and am affraid I'm not cleaning the guns properly. I've read the owner's manual and it helps but I'm still not confident I'm doing a great job. I currently wipe every thing down, use #9 Hoppers, dry every thing, and then apply a light coat of regular gun oil. I simply brush out the trigger and hammer areas. I'm affraid to put anything down there because I cannot clean it out afterwards. Do I need to use extra oil on some of the parts? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Here's what works for me: After a shooting session I hose out the reciever with Break Free aerosol, let it soak about 15 minute3s then repeat. I then blow it out with compressed air. For lubricant I use 50/50 Break Free and Mobil One. A few drops in the trigger mechanism and on the slide rails. About every 3rd time I do the same to the slide, but after blowing it out really good, no oil. The firing pin hole needs to stay oil free. I pretty much follow the manual.

A trick I use to prevent over-lubrication is to, on the day after I clean my guns, strip it down again and wipe it down once more, removing any oil which has seeped out.
When it come to lube, less is more.

I simply use a Hoppes cleaning kit... clean the barrel, slide and recoil spring using the solvent. For my USP which has a polygonal barrel, I just swab the barrel with solvent and patch cloth till clean. For my SIG and other rifled barrels, I run the brush through it 2-3 times after the first pass of solvent.
Then I use a Q-tip to wipe out the grip frame and hard to reach areas... sometime I use an old toothbrush if I see some debris in corners. As long as you are using clean ammo, the frame and trigger mechanism won't get that dirty.
I soak a patch cloth in gun oil and swab the barrel with it and wipe it over all the contact and friction points.
If I know the gun will sit a while without being fired, I'll go a little heavier on the oil. If I know that I'll have a heavy day of shooting comming up, I may go back and re-hit all the contact and friction points with Tri-Flo lubricant or Break-Free.
I've been cleaning handguns like this for almost 15 years now. I've used all three... Hoppes gun oil, Tri-Flo and Break-Free for lubricant. All three seem to work just fine... just depends on my mood and what I think I can tolerate for odor that day, lol.
I clean, wipe down with conditioning oil, dry.... then add a drop on oil to the rails there it will touch the slide. I work the slide to lube it up and clean off the excess.
The H&K armore at FLETCH in New Mexico trained us to clean our UPSc40, then dry it with a dry towel. After that it was one drop of oil on the barrel, wipe it all over and dab it off, then one drop of oil on each f the four frame rail contact points. Otherwise, keep it dry! It will shoot just fine completley dry. We did not clean or lubricate the guns for the first 1500 rounds of training.
