Use the letter date code:

By Serial # the P9s started at around 100,000 for the 9mm variety and the .45's begin at 400,000. I have a 1973 marked P9s and the number is 102,xxx. I think it was around 1975 that the German manufacturers began to use the alpha date codes. I had a .45 P9s target that was marked with the date code HI, translates into 78 so the pistol was made in 1978. Yours should be date marked on the frame above the trigger with either a pair of numbers or letters depending on when it was made.

There was no Letter code, but I will look again. s/n 103964 ( now the ATF knows ! )
Shot it this evening, very nice !.
By the second mag things were tightening up nicely. 2 mags equaled one ragged 2 x 2 inch hole and two flyers ( when my big head got big ).
Looked again, no letter code, the German manual was printed in 75. but I realize that doesn't prove anything.

Now I need a PSP or M8

I would make a rough estimate by your SN that it is from around 74/75. Does it have the hooked trigger guard? Mine has the older type guard without the hook, which was changed in production around SN 103xxx according to various samples I have seen in photos and in person. Here is a photo showing the date stamp above the trigger, and of course the old type trigger guard.

I have been interested in these pistols for many years now and I find that there is not really anything made currently that really comes close to the P9s. I am certain that current pistols available today will be better suited to the type of duty that is required by LE or military as the P9 series has an odd manual of arms, but in the end the newer pistols are lacking a certain unique character that these pistols have.

it has the hook type trigger guard.
I'll look at the right side at the same location of yours.
Are you using P-38 mags for range use ?

Do you have any info on the P9S Hunter barrel?

Thanks

Looks like the importer milled their name over a 73. It reads "PW Arms Redmond WA" all caps, the D and M in REDMOND are atop the 73.
Wow ! a 34 year old pistola , that a new for me.
Photobucket isn't loading this morning. is there another free pic hosting site that's gun freindly ?

In response to the above 1. I have a couple of WWII era P38 pistols and a few magazines but I will admit to never using the mags in the P9s, although I understand they are supposed to work. 2. As far as the hunter barrel I only know that these were available as an accessory from HK for a while but that was many years ago now. There has been one on Gunbroker that has not sold at $500 which is expensive but I can not imagine that they show up for sale often. I have a sport group upper end I was able to get from the same seller on GB with the 8" hunter barrel, it does have a different feel than the standard setup in that the weight makes it balance better IMO and the felt recoil is less. I think the only thing you would get with the longer barrel on a
P9s is more velocity, probably not much more in terms of accuracy unless you hang the front sight out at the end of the barrel. Those that are looking to do a suppressor on one of these may not need to cut up a rare extended barrel as I believe there is enough steel at the muzzle end of the standard 9mm barrel to thread for an adapter.

Yep - you don't need a hunter barrel to shoot one suppressed.
