I like to get a shorter barrel so I can carry and wondering if regular USP 45 barrel
will work on my USP tactical gun.

Yes the tactical barrel will fit in the USP.

Except you will probably have to prep the slide for an o-ringed barrel, otherwise you'll end up chewing up the o-ring frequently. A search would turn up details.

Do I have to prep my slide for the Jarvis barrel that I ordered for my USP .45? I ordered the extended/threaded barrel? If so, what does "prepping the slide" consist of?

If it has an o-ring on it, you'll probably have to. Not every USP needs it, but it doesn't hurt to go ahead and prep it.

Get some Crocus cloth and polish the barrel opening on the slide so that when you drag a cotton ball around it, inside and out, it does not snag any burrs. Go around that opening and in and out of it. When the cotton ball goes cleanly around and through the barrel opening both on the inside and outside you are good to add the o-ringed barrel.

Like GEMarsh said, no it won't. But do not run an o-ringed barrel without the o-ring. That's really the only area where damage could occur.
