AFAIK the only way around it is to order magazine "parts" that can be put together into 12rnd mags. However I don't know the legalities.

It is illegal to possess more than a 10 round mag in CA. You would be breaking the law by trying it.

And you can't just swap baseplates. It doesn't work that way by design.

If you ever have to use a magazine that has been "altered" in a self-defense situation, you will have problems in the courtroom... why risk it?

You'll have to move to Washington, Oregon, Nevada, or Arizona to enjoy your weapons without some liberal politician telling what you how many rounds you can load in a mag. My guess is that other than Arnold the majority of knuckleheads running your state have never fired much less owned a handgun in their life. In spite of that they feel qualified to legislate your gun rights down the toilet.

It's not illegal to have 12 rounders in Cali.

You can buy the "parts" from a 12 rounder and have them shipped to you. You just need to find someone that will do it. They just have to be shipped to the buyer unassembled. I contacted the Cali. DOJ a while back and they gave me the green light. But, and and say this emphatically, I would contact them yourself just to make sure nothing has changed since I talked with them.

Johnny

P.S. By the way, the DOJ was very nice.

Why go through all that unnecessary trouble for an extra 2 rounds? 10+1 is more then enough to do the job.

Can you buy the "LEO only" marked mag body as well? Because that's what he's going to need.

Good luck with that... but like I said, you will be "going against the grain" as far as the law in California is concerned.

Hell doesn't matter to me I don't live there. If I did though, no way I would want to try to sell that "parts shipped to this one dude" crap to a jury from the republic!

It's illegal in CA to build a 12rd magazine. Possession on the other hand is not illegal depending on the circumstances. It's also illegal to import them.
Essentially if you don't own one now, there probably isn't any legal means for you to get one, except for the usual exceptions :D

We ship magazines above 10rds to CA all the time. They do have to be shipped disassembled and sold as Rebuild Kits. The sole purpose of these kits are intended for those that currently LEGALLY own a magazine above 10rds (owned before the ban) and to be used to repair the worn or damaged said magazine above 10rds.

Note that assembling the shipped magazine into a complete magazine and not using it as its sole purpose (repair) will probably be a Felony in the State of CA.

Good luck,

I carry a 10 rounder in my HK45 as an LEO. I carried 7 rounders for years in my 1911 mags.
You do not 'need' 12 rounds. Committing a Felony for 2 rounds is asinine.

When you're at the range, and HK magazines cost $40+ each, it's nice to have more rounds between loading.

For the record I think that idea that "you should never need more than 10" is a stupid argument made up by the people who placed the limits into effect in the first place. My answer? I ALWAYS need more because the gangs around the corner have no problem with carrying 30 rounds of steel core armor piercing ammo in an AK.

you can use a "rebuild kit" for a normal 12 round mag. they're for sale all the time.

it's absolutely illegal when a person who is not exempt

"manufactures or causes to be manufactured, imports into the state, keeps for sale, or offers or exposes for sale, or who gives, or lends, any large-capacity magazine."

in california. you can keep the rebuild kits for when you travel to a more free state.

j/k....kinda;)

Legally, yeah its a big F to be in posession of a high cap mag in CA. But...they ONLY people I know who have been charged with 12020a2 were doing something wrong i the first place, ie bangers, etc. They were screwed long before they found the mags lol. If you are Joe Normal looking citizen and you were properly transporting your weapon and/or mags (unloaded),you would not get hassled for the high cap law. Especially w/ handguns, you cant really tell a high cap vs a 10 rounder unless you're very familiar w/ that series of gun. A cop is NOT going to sit on the side of the road and LOAD your mag to determine the capacity. Rifle mags are obviously a bit easier. Do so at your own risk. Comments above are not endorsed by my dept in any way shape or form, your mileage will vary:)

But one sure might look at the holes on the back of the mag when he's got them out to make sure they're not loaded and notice that there are too many bullet positions.

I wouldn't want to chance an easy felony conviction on the likelihood they don't do something as simple as reading the numbers or counting the holes on the back of the magazine.

I agree that it is a bad idea to risk a felony for two extra rounds of ammo. If you were ever to get in an altercation, your handgun would be seized and examined. You could go from a situation that was justifiable and where you were the victim to one where you are the criminal.

Good point. I was under the impression that it was a range gun. I wouldn't risk it in any sort of defensive way. I carry 12 b/c I can. If I couldn't...I'd carry 10. Not like an FN five seven where you're losing half your capacity (10 round difference). Only short 2...no big deal....

Hi all, thanks for all the advice, I figured it would never get checked anyways although that is a good point about if it is used in a self defense. Ill have to move to nevada. CA just lame about all the rules. I just want the mag that the gun is meant to carry, even if it is only 2 rounds. Once again thanks for all the advice everyone.
