Hey, all...

I just purchased a new HK P2000SK, chambered for the .40 S&W. I'm going to use it for carry.

I'm looking at testing a variety of personal defense rounds and I'm wondering what people think of the Buffalo Bore .40 S&W 155gr Speer Gold Dot JHP? The ballistics (per MidwayUSA are 1300 fps and 582 ft. lbs.).

Thanks!

I'm not an ammo expert, but that sounds like a pretty hot load for a subcompact. Control and excessive wear might be a concern. I do carry Gold Dot JHP's in .357 SIG however, and they excellent.

That's what I was thinking.

What is the hottest load (not sure how one measures that) that a person should put through a P2000SK?

Not sure about the .40, but I carry Double Tap +P 124gr. (http://www.doubletapammo.com/php/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21_37&products_id=120) in my 9mm P2000 SK.

Site lists the following specs:

Caliber : 9mm+P

Bullet : Speer Gold Dot JHP

Ballistics : 124gr @ 1310fps / 473ft. lbs. from a G17.
124 @ 1295fps / 462 ft. lbs. from a G19

I've seen the SK 9mm is OK for +P. I carry the DT +P to compensate for the performance loss due to the short barrel.

If I had my druthers, I'd probably run the 147gr. +P to get the most of the 9mm, but figure with the short barrel the 147gr. +P would probably only perform like a standard 147gr. in a 'normal' barrel so reducing the weight should compensate a bit.

Reports suggest both BB and DT produce excellent quality products. I choose DT since they appear to produce the same quality product at a better price.

I use the same ammunition for practice and carry and have have had no problems to date. I don't perceive the 9mm +P recoil as much different than non +P ammunition, but I imagine YMMV.

I'll also mention I run the DT 124gr. +P without issues in my Sig P239 and Beretta 92FS.

Good luck,

-john

We shoot .40, 155 gr JHP Federal and Winchester regularly with our P2Ks and P2K SKs. According to the stats from their website, they average 1140 FPS, but I don't have a chono to see how they perform out of the SK or P2K. I haven't seen any excessive wear or problems come up.

Buffalo bore is about the hottest stuff you can buy but I've never had a problem with it. On the other hand I don't shoot a lot of it because it is so darn expensive. I think it is OK for testing and carry but I wouldn't want and couldn't afford to shoot thousands of rounds of it.

I tend to stick with heavy Federal LE HST's for most calibers, because it is proven and far less expensive. Mostly use BB in .380 where any bit of improvement is appreciated.

FWIW, at least in 9mm, the Buffalo Bore +P+ is basically the same as the DoubleTap +P.

Consider:

Buffalo Bore: 2. Item 24B/20 (+p+) 124gr. Speer Uni Core (http://www.buffalobore.com/ammunition/default.htm#9mm)

Glock 19, 4 inch barrel------------------------------------1296 fps

Box of 20: $23.03

Double Tap: 9mm+P 124gr Speer Gold Dot JHP 50rds. (http://www.doubletapammo.com/php/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21_37&products_id=120)

124 @ 1295fps / 462 ft. lbs. from a G19

Box of 50: $27.95

Also, IIRC, there are standards regarding the +P, so anything labeled +P must adhere to those pressure levels.

The FAQ suggests that the SK can handle +P.

So:

1) I feel peachy running +P in my SK.
2) Since +P+ does not have standards, I'm less OK w/+P+.
3) DT +P seems to have same performance as BB +P+.
4) DT is quite a bit cheaper than BB.
5) Both BB and DT have excellent reviews.

Dunno about .40, since I'm totally 9mm.

Buffalo Bore .40 S&W 155gr Speer Gold Dot JHP? The ballistics (per MidwayUSA are 1300 fps and 582 ft. lbs.).

Double Tap: .40 S&W 155gr Speer Gold Dot JHP 50rds. (http://www.doubletapammo.com/php/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21_26&products_id=110)

1310fps 590 ft/lbs from a 4.5"bbl.
Ballistics : 155gr. @ 1275fps / 560 ft/lbs- Glock 23 (4.0"bbl)
1200fps 495 ft/lbs from a 3.5"bbl.

Box of 50: $29.95

Buffalo Bore: Item 23A/20: 155gr. Speer Uni Core (http://www.buffalobore.com/ammunition/default.htm#40sw)

a. Custom made 1911 with Nowlin (5inch barrel) = 1318 fps
b. Taurus PT 100 (4.9 inch barrel) = 1249 fps
c. Sig 229 (3.75 inch barrel) = 1221 fps

Box of 20: $24.24

No exact apples to apples in regards to barrel length, but it seems pretty close to me.

(And DT doesn't even call it +P)
