mine seems brand new and it has 6,000 rounds through.

HK says 20,000 rounds and I have no reason to doubt it. I've yet to break one.

Do you guys think that the life span is more due to rounds used or years in use?

I think the later is more reasonable as long as gun is properly cleaned and lubed is placed.

I broke one on my mk23 after 1000 rounds. I think it was my fault, because another 1000 have gone through and the replacement is holding up fine.

You will run out of ammo before you wear out the o-ring. Seriously though you probably will never need to worry about it

But having a spare on hand, in your range bag... is not a bad idea.

with the price of ammo now you probably won't ever have to worry about it.

Sad but true :(

Isn't that the truth.

I have the original O ring on my 45 tactical barrel that is 12 years old. If you keep them lightly (key word) lubricated and clean they last a long time. I've heard of them breaking when they get dry and then tear.

During the US Govt testing of the MK23 MOD 0 (the first time HK used the rubber O-ring on a pistol barrel) the O-ring would last @ 20,000 rounds on average. There is little noticeable difference in accuracy even w/o the O-ring in place. Keep it lubed and it should be good to go. Replace the recoil spring on an HK45/USP45 @ 18,000 rounds especially if shooting suppressed or with +P ammo.

I purchased my USP Tactical .45 in 2001 and still use the original o-ring several thousand rounds later. A little oil on the o-ring after a a good cleaning makes them last a really long time.
