View Full Version : What parts typically break when you rack the slide with lockout engaged?

So I bought a .45 tac from a guy used (over the net). First time I used it, I noticed that the mags weren't releasing right. Started to examine it an I noticed that the hammer strut was bent and the flat spring was broken, evidently from the guy racking the slide with the lockout engaged. I can see where he used some kind of tool to engage/disengage it.
I can fix it myself, but I need to order parts and wanted to make sure that I get everything I need. Does anything else but the hammer strut (and in my case flat spring) typically break when this happens?
Also, same gun, I get what looks like hot gas marks on one side of the spent casings when I shoot. It is similar to the marks a P7M8 leaves, but it is one big mark running almost the length of the casing and only on one side. I also get a small ding in the brass about half way up on the side. Would any of this indicate damage to the chamber?

The hammer strut is usually the only part that gets damaged when you rack the slide with the lockout device engaged. . . sounds like you've got it covered.

Sounds normal, but I would carefully clean and inspect the chamber anyway. The dings happen during ejection. . . if they happen in the chamber, then there would have to be some chunk of debris stuck in there. :)

I think you are right about the ding... for some reason the .45 seems to beat the brass up worse than my other USP's.
My main concern was the gas mark on the outside of the brass. I thought it might indicate that the chamber was out of spec/round on one side, and not supporting the brass correctly, letting gas slip by. I don't see any deformation or bulging of the brass, so I guess this is normal? I see it to some extent with my other guns, but not nearly as pronounced.
I have the same problem but I cant find a flat spring for my usp 40 any body know where to get one?

exact same on my USP 45 Tact. I have been "not" cleaning mine so I can try to see where the dent is occuring during ejection. So far the brass has not marked the slide enough to nail it down. I will shoot and not clean till it does. I will then be able to tell where to reform (cut, relieve)the slide, to stop this, as it drives me crazy.
I also have the gas mark,,,, AA code- 2000
