Today my son came home from college with his room mate. The young man, age 21, had never fired a firearm of any type in his life. I taught him some basic safety rules, how to hold, sight, and pull trigger on my P30, and how to load, make safe, and unload the gun. He loves the gun and loves shooting. I had a problem teaching him effectively because he is left handed and yet he does some things right handed. I couldn't really get him to hold the gun in any sort of definite style, such as Isocoles, Weaver, Combo. because he couldn't decide which hand he wanted to shoot with. He did both and felt comfortable with both. He actually did better with his left but he wasn't satisfied with the left. Can anyone give me some simple things to say to a newb in this sort of situation? I plan on taking him out to shoot the HK45C and P2000 at the end of the month if all goes according to plan. (He really was at odds when shooting my AK47. He didn't like shooting it left handed at all. Yet he couldn't hit anything right handed.
I have to say my son was proud of me when I kept a close group when demonstrating the proper, cough cough, shooting technique. Actually I felt nervous because I have never taught someone other than my three sons and wife how to shoot. I felt no pressure to impress them. I love my P30.

He is truly blessed! My dad never taught me how to shoot. I learned it all from Cooper's books and on my own recognizance.
Teach this young man as much as you can. Let him shoot your full lineup of guns, he will not soon forget it! One thing though, find out his master eye and go from there (as far as from which hand to shoot.)

Good job. The more shooters we bring into the fold the harder it will be for the 'Bama gang to fulfill their agenda.

Your doing a good deed, I am self taught and have taught a handful.

I'm a natural lefty, but right eye dominant. Determining which eye is dominant is really important. Over the years I've trained myself to shoot with either hand, but due to eye dominance I'm much more comfortable with my right hand.

Good job, Teach him to shoot with both eyes open, it may make a difference in his ability or comfort.

My cousin is a lefty but my grandfather wouldn't hear of that (those German genes!) so he taught him to / made him shoot right handed. Today, he does everything left handed except shooting. I think the lesson is to just stick with one when learning and keep at it. If he is more comfortable right, he should stick with it until he can hit something. Also, since most rifles eject cases to the right it just makes sense to shoot right handed. Just my 2 cents.
Good luck and thanks for bringing a new shooter to our ranks! I have two guys that want to learn how to shoot lined up and I can't wait to teach them.

right on Joehk, that's the proper way to shoot anyhow. The dominant eye still is the dominant eye but with both eyes open it takes away the tunnel vision effect and allows the shooter to see more of what is going on around him/her.

That's one thing I did insist on with him. He was agreeable to that. Also, he did end up just shooting the rifle right-handed. He is excited about coming back and trying out my .45 and some other little treasures I have. I appreciate all you guys giving encouragement and input.
