I'm new to the .40 S&W. I'm interested in HK USP .40 owners thoughts on ammo.

I'm more interested in what grain bullets seem to function best in this firearm for FMJ.

I plan on buying a bunch of diffrent brands with diffrent grain bullets but would like to see what you guys think first to maybe concentrate my search a little more.

All info welcome. Thank you!

I have a USP compact in .40. I've been running 165 grain WWB FMJ ammo through it. Never had any problems with it. I've also run Remington UMC 180 gr. hollow points through it as well. No problems with those either. Recently i bought a case of American Eagle 180 gr. FMJ. They have been running fine as well. I like the 180 gr. bullets better out of my compact. The 165 gr. seem a little snappier than the 180's. I have not used any of the other self defense ammo out there, but you did ask about FMJs. As far as function, I think the USP will eat darn near anything you would be willing to put through it. I've run 600 rounds through it on three different trips to the range before cleaning and it has run flawlessly. I could probably run a lot more through it before cleaning if I really wanted to, but there is no need. HTH

Maybe function was the wrong term. Because I know the USP will pretty much eat everything without cause for concern. I'm looking for something that does well target wise. Groups well. Although defense ammo will be researched also. I have had good results with Hornady Tap in my 9mm and 45. Thanks for the info chayse.

If you are looking for the most consistently accurate ammo you have to check out Double Tap Ammunition. Mike McNett is a genius when it comes to powder selection. Every load in every caliber that I have tried from him (40 cal, 45acp, and 10mm) has been crazy accurate and consistent. For defensive ammo his prices are great (usually about $35 for a box of 50). If you are going to look at some range ammo, I have had very good luck with Blazer Brass ammo. The USPs seem to like this stuff. Both of my USP 45's love it and my friends USP 40 loves it also.

I use Federal American Eagle 180 grain, 155 grain and 165 grain. From Remington, I use UMC 165 grain & 180 grain Full Metal Case. My preference is toward the UMC 180 grain FMC for the range. It's more consistent from shot to shot. I've used Federal Hydra Shoks in 180 grain as well. For my full size USP40, 180 grn produces the most consistent results. I've put Winchester BEBs through it but I'm not a fan of it. BTW, over 15,000 rounds without a hiccup.

I have put all types of ammo through mine and after 1600 rounds (not much compared to many, but a lot for me) I haven't had a single malfunction. I have used 165gr. WWB, 180gr. Blazer Brass, 155gr. Winchester Silvertip Hollow Points, and probably 5 or 6 others.

I use WWB 180gr. for range blasting ammo and Speer Gold Dot/ Gold Dot Short Barrel 180gr. for carry. The 180gr. has noticeably less felt recoil then the 165gr. and this may make it easier to group well.
