I have a deposit on a USP45 Tactical and a P30. I applied for my handgun permit back on Dec 5th. Just called the Police Dept and they said all my paperwork is back, but the detectives are real busy and they can't say when they will get around to finalizing it. By law, in NJ, the permit should take no more than 30 days. I don't want to annoy them and keep calling, but I feel like they are just taking their time sitting on the paperwork while my two new HK's are sitting at the dealer waiting to be picked up. Any suggestions on how I might get them to move the process along without annoying them or jeopardizing my getting the permit. I appreciate any suggestions. Especially from any law enforcement officers who have an inside understanding of the process.

Yeah I wouldn't try and push the police especially regarding something like guns. JayJay's right. Just be patient and all will be well. You'll get your guns and be very happy!

If you can, go down to your local PD in person. Showing up in person is alot more effective then calling on the phone. It's just too easy for the secretary or watch officer you get on the phone to push you aside. Tell them you want to speak to the person in charge of issuing the permits, in my town it was the captain of the detectives.
Always be very nice. Remember your not exactly annoying them, it is after all their job. Most states require that they notify you of their decision within a certain amount of time. Read your local laws.
Here in CT you are required to be given notice of approval/disapproval within 8 weeks from the time the application is submitted. When my 8 week wait ended, I showed up at the PD with increasing frequency to see what was going on. When it came close to 11 weeks, I made them aware of their legal obligation to notify me and then arranged for a meeting with the cheif of police, which is my right as a citizen of my town. The very next day I had my permit signed, no meeting and more improtantly no more waiting.
Be polite... but persistent. :)

I appreciate your frustration. I bought my gun on 6th Oct but due to our friends at NICS I could not collect it until NYE. Of course I had to pay for it and my FFL fee in Oct when it arrived.
If you really want to understand patience try waiting 100+ days for a CHL in Texas or 20-26 weeks for a holster.
It will come and it will be worth it ! :660:

Thanks for the advice, gentleman. I'll give it another week then take a walk over there. I do know one of the detectives fairly well. I'm sure If I went down and spoke with him directly he would be helpful in pushing it through.

Say what you want about Florida, but you guys in states like New Jersey need to contact your lawmakers and make a case for the right to buy a gun like Florida and a bunch of others. Good luck.
P.S. 60 degrees and sunny today.
