OK maybe a silly question since I own both a fullsize HK USP .45 & a compact USP .40 S&W "stainless" model.. is the slide actually milled out of a block of stainless or is it a coating of some sort ( aka Robar type coating ) ???
** while at the range letting a female friend shoot my .40 S&W in preperation of her taking her CHL class she actually dropped it & marred the back of the slide, nothing major just looks like a file was run across the edge, I'm wondering if it IS milled out of a block of stainless if I could just smooth it down with various grade of files ?
any suggestions are appreciated..
Thanks !!

It's stainless, but don't try to fix it with files. You won't be able to match the original look and the gun will only end up looking worse.

If you don't want to pay for it,,,I have fixed a few of my ooops on stainless before. It depends on the look you are after. I prefer non-polished (thank god).
I have put sandpaper down on a flat surface,,rubbed offending surfaces until marks are gone,,,then bead blast for a nice mat finish. I like mat finish as it can be repaired with another trip to the bead blaster, and does not reflect light so much.
It can be done with files and stones too,,,just harder to keep it flat or straight (no dips). You still have to polish when done or blast for consistant finish.
You can also polish whole slide,,then rub sides (or top)on fine sandpaper to give the sides or top (whichever you like) a "brushed" finish that stands out from the rest of the slide. Or tape off polished surfaces and blast some of the surfaces.
have fun,,,it isn't too hard. DON'T GET IN A HURRY AND (don't)USE ROUGH SANDPAPER or you will cause yourself MUCH more work.

I thought all of the stainless USP's came in the older style gray box. I have three (USP .45, USPc .45, and USPc .40) and they all have the gray box. Am I wrong?

If I am not mistaken the USP stainless first production guns did come with brown boxes...then in mid nineties USP stainless guns were shipped in gray cases up until 2000 then they came in the standard black cases up until the last 2- 3 years until they stopped importing them into the US

It had a DE date code on it...DE can't be the date code, They weren't made in 1934. That's the country of origin, maybe? Isn't that the year Hitler outlawed the private ownership of guns?

Don't mind me... LOL. I will need to pick up my gun on monday or tuesday and then ill let you know the date code... I believe it is in a blue box though...
Are you in the USA or Canada? If its a stainless DE marked USPF .40sw, that a recent build. I know Canada still gets the stainless USP.
I heard USA may be getting them again too, but thats all I heard. What country are you in?
