Wouldn't the ol' HK4 be considered a HK pocket pistol?

I for one, hope HK never does. I think their compact line is enough. Too many players in the game and not that I think HK could not make a gun that can compete and would be great in the market, I would rather have them focus on standard product development than trying to get into a niche CCW market.
Personally, (my personal opinion, so not trying to spark a debate/flamefest), but Heckler & Koch "compromised", by designing a gun around the ultimate "compromise caliber", rather than aim development at the 10mm. I'm not saying for a nanosecond that the disappearance of the 10mm in favor of the .40 S&W compromise led to it's demise, but imagine if they had designed the USP around the 10mm.... I just don't want them to compromise again by getting into a market that would take a shred of focus away from what they already do so well... |

From the way I see it, the 10mm is one of the least likely rounds for a military or LE group to issue. The size of the round leads to fairly large grips (thus more difficult for shooters with small hands, not just women); the recoil results in less accuracy by the typical shooter and slows down the ability to bring the gun back on target (I have seen very well trained shooters do amazing things with a 10mm, but they were not the rank and file type shooter); and the cost of the ammo for departments/military units would also be factored into their buying decisions.
Secondly, the 10mm round also presents issues with stress, affecting parts replacement and sevrice life on the pistol. Also, the 40 cal wasn't the first compromise, the 10mm round itself was the compromise. After the gun manufacturers found that their pistols were getting beat to death by the 10mm round, the 10mm "light" round was developed. As more and more reduced load 10mm rounds came onto the market, HK had to develop a different locking piece for their MP5 10mm. The 40 cal was nothing more than an attempt to approximate the performance of the 10mm light, in a smaller package (thus allowing smaller grips and smaller pistol size in general). From my perspective, HK made a business decision to concentrate with the upgrade of older classic designs, rather than start with a blank sheet of paper. And, I can't argue, it's probably more profitable doing the "if you can't beat them, join them" approach. I think of innovation with the P9s and P7 line of pistols. Yes, I realize that very little in firearms is actually "new." The squeeze cocker concept used on the P7 originated many, many decades ago. I think that HK's G11 experience (losses) has affected them to this day. All these different companies coming out with retro versions of 100 year old pistol designs does nothing for me. Quote:

I'm with you on the 10mm platform. If anyone could engineer a reliable, durable 10mm pistol...it's H&K. I can see the caliber beating up an MP5 rather quickly due to automatic fire, but i'm sure HK could figure out a way to build a beefy pistol to take the abuse. plus doesn't "HK10 Pistol" have a nice ring to it?!

I have purchased three SIGs this year, a 239, 226, and a CPO 1911. No issues with any of them. That SIG quality has declined is something I hear repeatedly but, generally without any data.

I would absolutely love for HK to produce a slim, single stack, polymer frame, hammer fired, dedicated concealed carry pistol on the order of the Kahr line. Kahr makes an almost perfect gun for concealed carry. The "almost" part involves reliability.
The best HK makes now is the P2000sk, which is outstanding...just a bit big for certain concealment situations. |

It has some initial issues, like Ruger's LCP, such as misfire when dropped on the ground when locked, the magazine feed lips. But again it happens to some of them, and Sig had a recall. Mine has a serial number right after the recall coverage, and never has any problems. Last edited by speedo; 11-06-2009 at 10:56 PM. |
